Brent Benson is a 6″1′ Point Guard with amazing scoring ability. He played his last couple of pro seasons in the UK, however, he sat out the 2015-2016 campaign to expand his Brand B3 Academy in the US.

We managed to catch up with him last week:

BG: Thanks for joining us at thebettergame. Please tell us who you are and your basketball journey until signing your first pro contract?

Brent Benson: I’m from Gainesville, GA.  After graduating high school in 2004, I had two successful basketball seasons at Costal Georgia Community College.  I graduated from Costal and went to play for Texas State University, where I finished my last two years playing college basketball.

BG:  You have taken a year off pro basketball to build your brand B3 Academy. Tell us about B3 academy?

Brent Benson:  B3 Academy was started in 2011 with the vision of helping student-athletes be successful on and off the court.  I want to teach the youth the fundamentals and skill set of basketball, along with life skills.  Over the past two years, I have been blessed to be able to expand B3 Academy in many different directions.  B3 Academy also mentors and prepares high seniors for college and B3 Academy will host its first Men’s Basketball League this summer.

BG: You played in the D-league? How was that experience?

Brent Benson:  It was a great learning experience and I learned a lot from the basketball side as well the business side.

BG: You most recently played two seasons in the BBL (UK) for the now defunct Birmingham Knights and the Plymouth Raiders.  What did you learn from those two seasons?
Brent Benson:  I was thankful for the opportunity to play two years in the UK.  I really enjoyed all of the love the fans showed me as well as the great UK weather…LOL

BG: The champ Floyd Mayweather is a friend of yours. What advice has he given you in your basketball and business career?

Brent Benson:  Hard Work and being dedicated to your craft has been the best advice that he has given me.

BG:  Will you play again in Europe? Do you have any offers?

Brent Benson:  The door is not completely closed as of yet.  However, I am doing great things with the academy here in the States.  I am staying in shape just in case.  I’ve had a few offers for the 2015-16 season, but financially it didn’t make sense so I decided to stay home to run B3 Academy.
BG: What will you work on this summer?

Brent Benson:  This summer is a busy one due to the launch of the B3 Men’s Basketball Summer League.  I plan to continue to host basketball camps and clinics for the youth as well as continue personal basketball training.

BG: What was the best game you had in your career so far?

Brent Benson:  When playing for Texas State, I was benched for the first 10 minutes of the game due to me arriving late.  I had lost focus due to the fact that I was not allowed to start the game.  Thankfully, I had great teammates and they helped me to regain focus.  I ended up scoring 40 points that game and we won.

BG: What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue basketball on a high level and what are some ways that they could become better?

Brent Benson:  I would advise them to work on their craft, pay attention to details, and most importantly WORK HARD!
